Frequently Asked Questions

  • The insurance based system (also known as in-network physical therapy) is where insurance companies have a direct relationship with physical therapy clinics and providers. Due to the nature of this relationship, several barriers to high level care can develop including high patient volume, decreased 1-1 attention, short duration appointments and the inability to treat multiple issues.

This is why Empower has chosen to provide “out-of-network physical therapy''; meaning insurance companies are not directly involved in your care. We have found that this model allows for greater freedom to carry out your care in a way that prioritizes your specific needs and goals. Ultimately, this helps you feel better faster, often resulting in fewer sessions and sometimes even costing less. You pay for your sessions at the time of appointment and, if requested, we will provide you with a superbill which can be submitted to your insurance for potential reimbursement. We suggest you check with your insurance company to learn more about your specific out-of-network benefits for physical therapy services.

  • In the state of Massachusetts, you have unrestricted “direct access” to physical therapy, meaning you do not require a referral or prescription from a doctor to receive physical therapy services.
